SCP-001

Item #: SCP-001

Object Class: Erebus

Special Containment Procedures: Item SCP-001 has been discredited to the scientific community. SCP-001 is predicted to intersect with Earth's gravitational field in approximately 56 years, at which time this file shall be declassified to all Foundation employees.

Description: Discovered in 1898 by German scientist Georg Waltemath. Origin assumed natural. Item SCP-001 orbits the Sun at a distance of 131 million km and is 700km in diameter. Item completes its revolution around the Sun in a 163 year cycle. SCP-001 is functionally invisible when not placed between the earth and the Sun. When SCP-001's gravitational field intersects with Earth's, all anomalous activity is extinguished.

Natural structures and artificial objects have their natures suppressed for the time of the lunar eclipse. Anomalous creatures temporarily cease to exist in a process universally described as excruciatingly painful.

SCP-001's anomalous effects have been encountered only by the Administrator, who has prepared the following document in the event that Operation Howling Dark is accomplished.

Mankind in its present state has been around for a quarter of a million years, yet only the last 4,000 have been of any significance.

So, what did we do for nearly 250,000 years? We huddled in caves and around small fires, fearful of the things that we didn't understand. It was more than explaining why the sun came up, it was the mystery of enormous birds with heads of men and rocks that came to life. So we called them 'gods' and 'demons', begged them to spare us, and prayed for salvation.

Salvation came when the Black Moon howled. A single night was all it took to turn the tide in favor of humanity, and we took our first victory against all the things that thought they were safe in the dark. That night has ocurred over and over again. Ragnarok, the Crucifixion, the creation of the Foundation. Each time the Black Moon howled, humanity has had the opportunity to progress.

Your careers have led you to believe that the purpose of the Foundation is the containment of anomalies. That is a lie. Our purpose is to ensure that SCP-001, the Black Moon, howls forever more.

It may sound impossible. To alter the rotation of a moon? But the impossible is possible. I and thirteen compatriots witnessed the impossible occurred on a beach in 1881, when a ritual that would've resulted in an XK-Class Scenario fizzled into nothingness. I witnessed the possibilities of a world where the only thing lurking in the shadows is our moon.
