Item #: SCP-5377

Object Class: Safe

Special Containment Procedures: SCP-5377 is contained in a Secure Anomalous Item Locker located at Site-119. Access to SCP-5377 is restricted to Foundation personnel exceeding Level 2 clearance. Foundation personnel diagnosed with bulimia, depression, extreme anxiety disorders, or severe tree nut induced anaphylaxis are advised against interacting with SCP-5377.

Pecan

Depicts a single portion of SCP-5377, removed during testing.

Description: SCP-5377 is a pecan pie measuring 28 centimeters in diameter. SCP-5377's anomalous attributes manifest after coming into contact with papillae1 along a human subject's tongue, in which SCP-5377 will permanently alter their perception of taste. This effect occurs due to changes within a subject's taste receptor cells; however, it remains unknown whether or not the properties of this effect occur randomly or manifest intentionally. Currently, SCP-5377's attributes have these recorded effects on a subject's perception of taste.

  1. The inability to taste or enjoy specific types of food.
  2. A sudden liking or craving for foods that the subject initially did not enjoy.
  3. The inability to taste.
  4. Extreme hypersensitivity in regards to taste.

These effects can manifest individually or collectively; however, the correlation between these attributes are still under investigation. Repeated contact with SCP-5377 can alter, remove, or add these effects. These effects can also manifest in other organisms.

Attempts at removing pieces of SCP-5377 have resulted in them re-manifesting after 24 hours, even after consumption. Consuming the entirety of SCP-5377 has had similar effects.

SCP-5377 was discovered in a local bakery in Columbus, Indiana after online reviews intercepted by Foundation webcrawlers criticized the business for "literally disfiguring their senses of taste forever." Foundation agents embedded in the local police were able to shut down the bakery over health policy violations, in which they were able to extract SCP-5377.

Addendum 5377-1: On 11/08/2018, a series of experiments were performed in order to measure SCP-5377's anomalous properties. A summary of these findings has been attached below.

Date Subject Protocol Results
08/03/2014 D-134894 Subject consumed one slice (47 cm3) of SCP-5377. Several days after consumption, the subject reported having issues tasting dairy products despite never having an intolerance prior. The subject also reported that they no longer enjoyed the taste of salmon.
09/23/2014 Adult male bovine Subject consumed 80% of SCP-5377. The subject rejected their standard diet after consumption. After a series of tests, it was concluded that the subject was unwilling to consume any sustenance other than beef.
10/19/2014 D-174819 Subject consumed 3 individual portions of SCP-5377 After consuming the first portion, D-174819 reported that they could not longer feel sensations from their tongue. This effect persisted until the subject ate the second portion of SCP-5377, in which the subject stated that they began craving the taste of human blood. After consuming the final piece of SCP-5377, D-174819 reported hypersensitivity throughout their mouth. Their desire for human blood remained.
01/20/2015 Doctor Alex Fullham Doctor Fullham consumed the entirety of SCP-5377. Doctor Fullham reported enjoying the taste of Laura Collins's meals following previous claims of said meals being "inedible." It is unconfirmed whether or not this was caused by SCP-5377; however, it is plausible due to circumstances. SCP-5377 later manifested in it's containment.
01/22/2015 Researcher Devin Collins Researcher Collins consumed two portions of SCP-5377. No valid results were recorded.
02/01/2015 Researcher Devin Collins Researcher Collins consumed one portion of SCP-5377. No valid results were recorded.
02/10/2015 Researcher Devin Collins Researcher Collins consumed three portions of SCP-5377. No valid results were recorded.

Researcher's Note: Dr. Collins is not allowed to further experiment with SCP-5377. Anyone who allows him to gain access to SCP-5377 will be punished.

Devin, we all love Laura. But your wife's food is terrible. Stop trying to hide from it. Get a divorce or just tell her, but don't abuse your clearance level.
