Item #: SCP-5190-EX

Object Class: Keter Explained

Special Containment Procedures: Information regarding SCP-5190 and its transmissions is to be concealed from the astronomical community and its associated entities until further notice.

Continued monitoring of SCP-5190 is to be conducted by the astronomy team stationed at Lunar Area-32. Dr. Sorenson is to oversee the progress of these studies and containment decisions are to be made at his discretion as well. Cooperative measures with members of Project Heimdall is pending.

Description: SCP-5190-EX denotes an object previously identified by NASA as TMR-1C, a celestial body of unknown composition located 450 light-years away from Earth in the constellation Taurus. SCP-5190-EX is thought to have been ejected from a nearby binary star system during an early stage in said system's development, and is now travelling away from the system in roughly the direction of Earth at a speed of ~20,000 km/s. SCP-5190-EX was classified as a rogue protoplanet upon discovery.

SCP-5190-EX exhibits unusually high luminosity for a planet-type body, with its brightness significantly exceeding luminosity that should be possible for a normal exoplanet. Therefore, a potentially anomalous phenomenon was suspected to be involved. Lunar Area-32 was instructed to monitor the object for further confirmation of anomalous activity. SCP-5190-EX was not given an SCP designation at the time, although it exhibited unusual and irregular brightening and dimming for the next four years.

Four years after being put on watch, SCP-5190-EX was observed to emit a series of electromagnetic pulses over a three-week period. Probabilistic and linguistic analysis of these flashes determined that these pulses were unlikely to be random and likely represented an intentional electromagnetic transmission aimed at Earth, although no discernible data was deciphered from the signals. It was therefore concluded by the supervising Dr. Sorenson that SCP-5190-EX possessed a sentient population of extraterrestrials that was technologically advanced enough to detect Earth, identify intelligent life on it, and desire contact. The object was promptly designated SCP-5190 and classified as Keter.

Flashing transmissions from the planet have intermittently continued since, but still have not been deciphered.

Addendum 5190.1: The following is a series of emails between Dr. Sorenson, Project Head of SCP-5190-EX investigations, and Dr. Jaskes, senior researcher and Project Committee Advisor.

Addendum 5190.2: On 2/28/2004 an experimental probe equipped with the aforementioned interstellar drive was launched in the direction of SCP-5190-EX. The purpose of this launch was primarily to demonstrate the performance of that version of the Temporal Sink and secondarily to observe and report on SCP-5190-EX. The probe arrived in late May of 2019.

SCP-5190-EX as seen as by the probe's long range imaging system during approach.

Several scans of SCP-5190-EX were taken and beamed back to Earth. Following extensive analysis of the collected data, it was confirmed that SCP-5190-EX was actually a micro-quasar.1 SCP-5190-EX was noted to be significantly dimmer than a standard micro-quasar due to its lack of an accretion disk; this is thought to be due to the object having been ejected from its original system before it was able to siphon enough mass from a partner star.

Radiation imaging of the object further verified that it was indeed a micro-quasar, and therefore could not to support life of any kind. Additional monitoring by the probe determined that the apparent transmissions from the subject were merely the result of it passing through dense pockets of reactive elements present in the gas cloud. These elements interacted with the black hole and generated friction, releasing flashes of light and radiation as a result.

Dr. Sorenson continued to deny the legitimacy of evidence collected by the probe even after it was verified that none of the data had been corrupted or altered. He eventually began accusing teammates of sabotage and was placed on temporary leave.

Addendum 5190.3: Following an affirmative majority vote by the Project Committee as per Explanation Protocol 5.1, SCP-5190-EX was officially reclassified as Explained on 5/29/19.

Addendum 5190.4: The following email was received by Dr. Jaskes shortly after SCP-5190-EX's reclassification.
