Item #: SCP-5244

An SCP-5244 instance found on the 41st Street beach.

Special Containment Procedures: The 40th through 42nd Street beaches and surrounding beach houses of Ocean City, New Jersey have been purchased by the Foundation. In order to reduce suspicion, civilians are to be allowed on the beach only on days when a standard, netted ocean barrier has been lowered. Foundation staff disguised as lifeguards are to alert civilians that the ocean is inaccessible due to hazardous rock formations.

Foundation personnel are to only accept an offer during testing or with the permission of Dr. Huell. When an SCP-5244 instance manifests, Foundation personnel are to interact with them cordially. Should personnel deny the entities' offer, they should tap it twice on the top of its shell and hand-deliver back into the ocean as a show of respect.

Description: SCP-5244 refers to a collection of Atlantic Rock Crabs found on the 40th, 41st, and 42nd Street beaches of Ocean City, New Jersey. SCP-5244 instances show no deviations in appearance from normal Atlantic Rock Crabs; however, some have shown a light golden tint near the back of their shells. SCP-5244 inhabit large gabbro1 deposits. The internals of the stones have been hallowed out significantly and a large majority of the ocean floor within these rocks has been excavated by SCP-5244.

At 9 am on all days except Sunday, SCP-5244 instances will approach the nearest human and write a proposition in the sand with its pincer.2 This involves SCP-5244 delivering a mundane item or items that the person has misplaced throughout their lives in exchange for paper currency. The item the instance of SCP-5244 is offering is unspecified and prices have shown to vary from a few cents to thousands of dollars. Prices do not appear to correlate to the items.

Addendum One — Testing

TESTING REPORT
SCP-5244

Dr. Sandra Huell was given the offer of 35 dollars. The item she received was her 'walk-off home run ball' from her time playing softball in high school.

Site-322 Director Paul Lague was given the offer of 300 dollars and, upon accepting, was given a 1999-model 'Furby.' Dir. Lague was displeased, claiming he 'got rid of this damned thing for a reason.'

Staff/Lifeguard Cecil Moore paid 43 cents to an instance of SCP-5244. The item returned was a crumpled drawing made by Moore when he was a child.

Staff/Lifeguard William Pepper was given the price of 4,000 dollars. After accepting, a small metal box containing a Rolex watch and 3,000 dollars was delivered back to him. Pepper claimed he was mugged 4 years ago and the items and money were what was stolen from him.

Note: This test was carried out after Dr. Grace Woodraw misplaced important physical documents during an unrelated containment breach at a nearby site.

The offer of 6,700 dollars was given to Dr. Woodraw. In return, half of the misplaced documents were returned. The next day, Dr. Woodraw was given another offer, this being 8,300 dollars. The items returned half of the remaining documents.

Three days later, Dr. Woodraw was once again given an offer by an instance of SCP-5244. The price for the items increased by over double from the last encounter. This offer was declined. SCP-5244 instances continued to follow around personnel with their new price point. All offers were declined.

SCP-5244 approached Dr. Woodraw for a final time three days later with a price point of 4,500 dollars. This offer was accepted and the remaining documents were returned.

It is of note that on rare occasions, SCP-5244 entities will attempt to purchase items from Foundation personnel. Most notably, weaponry and scrap metal.

This began during the Foundation's primary acquisition of the beaches which SCP-5244 inhabit; an instance of SCP-5244 became aware of a guard's gun and began circling him. The guard returned the instance back to the ocean using the standard protocol. Ten minutes later, twenty instances of SCP-5244 began searching for the guard and his gun. The guard was offered a piece of gold jewelry and cash for his gun but was ordered to deny the offer.

Addendum Two — Investigations into SCP-5244 Habitat

Addendum Three — Further Incidents

SCP-5244 instances began delivering stone tablets to Foundation staff requesting help in spying on 'The Clawmunists.' These offers were politely denied.

On Sunday, August 11, 2018, at 3:30 AM, a red seaplane landed on the ocean above SCP-5244's habitat. Several unidentified figures began unloading large crates onto the ocean which then sank into the depths. Security footage then shows the seaplane speeding to the shore where it was met by an instance of SCP-5244 holding a large amount of cash. A figure exited the plane, received the money, and reentered the plane.

On the same morning at 4:30 AM, three pontoon boats landed onshore. Two figures exited the first boat and were met by multiple instances of SCP-5422 exiting out of the ocean in groups. The groups were each holding plastic crates on top of their shells. These were then loaded onto the boats before the figures placed a briefcase onto a group upon the loading's completion.

Another expedition was organized with Cancer-4 in order to discern what occurred during this event.

Investigations into McCormick & Co, the owners of the Old Bay Seasoning recipe, found that none of their factories produced the product. This was inquired upon by a Foundation front company, the following letter was received:
