Item #: SCP-XXXX

Object Class: Safe

Special Containment Procedures: SCP-XXXX is to be contained in the room in which it was found in Site-192, with access restricted to Level 4 and above personnel. No attempts are to be made to interact with the external interface or internal components of SCP-XXXX.

Description: SCP-XXXX is a large machine believed to have been constructed by the Foundation in a previous iteration of reality. The front of the machine houses a single unlabelled black button and a small screen displaying a single flashing period. The contents of the screen have not been observed to change since containment began.

The machine itself is housed within a large white plastic case measuring approximately 1m on each side, though irregularly shaped and lacking any visible seams. The Foundation logo is emblazoned upon one side of the case. Limited documentation recovered alongside the machine suggests it is powered by a small nuclear generator that will last approximately 400 years under optimal circumstances, though radiological readings of the device have revealed no evidence of nuclear material.

Attempts at interacting with the machine have yielded no results; the button appears to be locked in place and the screen, while visually appearing to be a touch screen, does not respond to inputs. With the exception of the physical documentation recovered alongside the device, no record of its construction or operation exists within Foundation logs.

SCP-XXXX was found during the expansion of Site-192, when construction crews dug into an undocumented chamber located in the surrounding rock. No evidence of other existing chambers has been found. The recovered documentation has been partially transcribed below.

The disease has currently infected approximately 20% of the global population. We still have no idea where it came from, or what vector it's using to attack us. We haven't even been able to it. Fatalities have been low so far, but given the speed at which it's spread we're expecting the number to jump quickly. Work on a cure is ongoing, but no real progress has been made.

The disease attacks the central nervous system first, rapidly destroying the hosts sense of touch and . I should note that calling it a disease might be inaccurate - we've yet to detect any bacterial, viral or fungal infections in people suffering from the condition. Following the loss of sensation and , alterations to visual perception occurs approximately 24 hours later. This manifests in a number of different ways, though the most common presentations are an altered colour sense (for example, perceiving red as green, green as purple etc.) or apparently random removals in the wavelengths of light able to be seen. This takes approximately one week to fully manifest once symptoms begin.

Following the full development of the sensory alterations, a wide array of changes to cognitive function occur. Whole-sale changes in personality, fundamental changes to the perception of reality and are all common symptoms at this stage. These changes continue until death occurs, mostly commonly through either some change to the brain that stops vital bodily functions from occurring, or through violent confrontation with other infected people.

Half the population is estimated to be infected at this point, and any attempts at determining the number of dead would be purely speculative. Millions, easily. The Foundation remains largely intact but most other public bodies have collapsed.

We've ruled out any mundane source for this infection, whatever it is. Conventional medicine has failed to provide a source or a cure for this malady, and so we are forced to double down on more esoteric ideas.

We still have no idea where it came from, but the disease is attacking us through our very sense of . It's some form of conceptual contagion that spreads through and other related . We found a couple of survivors in areas that had been otherwise completely infected, poor bastards with no that seem to be completely immune.

It's given us a angle to work from, at least. Now we need to find a cure.

Infection is almost global at this point, baring some isolated Foundation sites. I'm sure there are other pockets of people out there but at this point we have to assume we're it.

Curing this thing seems impossible. Other solutions seem… extreme, but we have no other ideas at this point.

Even knowing what the disease is has gotten us nowhere. It's a concept, an idea. There's no physical source or root for us to treat. We've never seen anything like it, and we are woefully ill equipped to do anything about it. Some of us have started work on while the rest continue looking for a cure, but I'm not hopeful.

I don't think there's any hope for a cure. Even the people still trying to develop one don't really believe they will find one. Crazy discussions involving curative thought processes and medicative ideas take up more of their time than any actual work. Even if there was something to that, who knows where they would start. It sounds like the start of some new branch of science, but I don't think there's time to develop it.

We lost contact with the last other active Foundation site today. No cure has been found. The machine is ready, and I think we're out of options.

We've decided to activate the machine. We can only hope that whatever meek existence humanity has afterwards is preferable to extinction.

If you're reading this afterwards, know that we are sorry. We tried, and we failed. This machine will alter humanity. Remove the ability of our species to , and in doing so render us immune to this disease. Hopefully it will alter enough of reality that you aren't driven insane by what is left. Certain fundamental concepts of the universe will be utterly alien to you. You probably won't even be able to perceive them. They will be entirely incomprehensible, if you can even see them at all. Half of this document will probably be jibberish to you.

You are less than you should be. Smaller. Your forebears have failed you, leaving you but a fraction of what you deserve. We can only hope that it is enough.

May all the Gods forgive us.
